Banana is obviously a vocabulary of tropical African atmosphere, but the word appears in the fruit world and included in English after a wandering process.

Banana很显然是一个具有热带非洲气息的词汇,但该词出现在水果世界并收录到英语中却经过一段漂泊过程。

Asian origins?源于亚洲吗?

Banana, apparently a word from one of the languages of the Congo area (it has been speculated that it derives ultimately from Arabic banana ‘finger, toe’, an origin which would be echoed in the English term hand for a bunch of bananas, and serves as a reminder that many varieties of banana are quite small, not like the monstrous articles standardly imported into Britain).

Banana 一词明确的源于刚果地区的一种语言,人们推测最初是源自阿拉伯语的 banana 一词,指“手指、脚趾”。这一推测起源也呼应了英语短语 a bunch of bananas / 一把香蕉,也提醒了人们,大多数品种的香蕉都很小,并不像现在进口的巨型香蕉一般。

The banana comes to Britain香蕉来到英国

In 1633, the first batch of bananas from the Bermuda arrived in the UK and was sold in the shop of herbalist Thomas Johnson. And its name in the previous forty years ago has been spread, then often spelled bonana or bonano, the two words in Spanish only refers to the banana tree. Initially, the British did not eat bananas, but made banana tarts or pies.

1633年,来自百慕大群岛的第一批香蕉到达英国,在草药商 Thomas Johnson 的店里售卖。而它的名字在此前的四十多年前就已经流传开来,那时常常拼写为 bonana 或 bonano,这两个词汇在西班牙语中仅指香蕉树。最初,英国人并不生吃香蕉,而是做成香蕉挞或馅饼。

Go Bananas!

The colloquial use of bananas for ‘mad, crazy’ is a surprisingly recent development. There is an isolated record of it from the US in the 1930s meaning ‘sexually perverted, degenerate’, but the current usage seems to have originated in US college slang of the mid to late 1960s. It is not clear how it arose. Some connection has been suggested with the earlier slang term banana oil ‘nonsense’, which dates from the 1920s, but since the origins of that too are unknown, the suggestion only pushes the mystery one stage further back.

这是比较近期的一种口语化的表达法,意为“mad,crazy”。关于这个短语辞典中还有一条独立的记录,源自上世纪三十年的美国,指“性变态的、堕落的”,但目前的词义源于上世纪六十年代末期的美国校园习语,目前尚不清楚该词义是如何产生的。

Bananaland

Since the late nineteenth century, Bananaland became the nickname of Queensland in the Australian population, which was named after the banana is an important crop in the state. The more disrespectful name is banana republic, the phrase created in the thirties of the last century, refers to the United States tropical region of small unstable development of the state, their economy depends mainly on banana exports.

自十九世纪末期开始,Bananaland 成为澳大利亚人口中昆士兰州的诨名,这因为香蕉是该州重要农作物而得名。更为不恭的名称是 banana republic,该词组在上世纪三十年代创生,指美国热带地区小型的发展不稳定的州,它们的经济主要依赖于香蕉出口。

是不是看完本文感觉一个小小的香蕉竟然也包含这么多文化?
